Sunlight Glint Confirms Liquid in Titan Lake Zone

NASA's Cassini Spacecraft has captured the first flash of sunlight reflected off a lake on Saturn's moon Titan, confirming the presence of liquid on the part of the moon dotted with many large, lake-shaped basins.
Cassini scientists had been looking for the glint, also known as a specular reflection, since the spacecraft began orbiting Saturn in 2004. But Titan's northern hemisphere, which has more lakes than the southern hemisphere, has been veiled in winter darkness. The sun only began to directly illuminate the northern lakes recently as it approached the equinox of August 2009, the start of spring in the northern hemisphere. Titan's hazy atmosphere also blocked out reflections of sunlight in most wavelengths. This serendipitous image was captured on July 8, 2009, using Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer.

Nanotech Breakthrough: Self-Cleaning Solar Panels

Solar panels may have just become more low maintenance. While conducting research on a cure forl Alzheimer's, scientists at Tel Aviv University ended up with a nanotech breakthrough that could mean no more worrying about keeping solar panels clean - they can clean themselves!

The researchers were conducting experiments on ways to control peptide atoms and molecules (Alzheimer's sufferers have a particular peptide found in the plaques that form in their brains) and they found a way to get peptides to self-assemble in a vacuum. The resulting arrangement of peptides acts as a dust- and water-repelling coating.

Not only can the coating keep solar panels clear from debris, but it also could be used as a supercapacitor, meaning better lithium batteries. Two boosts to clean tech with one discovery!

NASA's WISE Gets Ready to Survey the Whole Sky

NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, is chilled out, sporting a sunshade and getting ready to roll. NASA's newest spacecraft is scheduled to roll to the pad on Friday, Nov. 20, its last stop before launching into space to survey the entire sky in infrared light.

It will circle Earth over the poles, scanning the entire sky one-and-a-half times in nine months. The mission will uncover hidden cosmic objects, including the coolest stars, dark asteroids and the most luminous galaxies.

Consumers Still Don't Understand What Android Is: Report

"Consumers steer clear of Google's OS and sell-out is below everyone's expectations. Consumers recognise the Google brand, but still do not understand what Android is," according to Francisco Jeronimo, analyst, IDC. Though Android has won attention in the mobile industry lately, with Motorola and Sony Ericsson choosing it for their new top models, but consumers still show little interest toward smartphones running Google's Android, reports Reuters. At the end of September, 5.4 per cent of the smartphones in the region were powered by Google Android, up from 4.2 per cent three months earlier, but still dwarfed by market leader Symbian, which held a 48 per cent market share.
